How do I set a worker name in XMRig?
You usually set a worker name in XMRig with the rig-id setting in your configuration file, or with --rig-id when starting XMRig from a command line. Your mining pool must support that setting; some pools instead expect the worker name beside your wallet address or in the password field.
Set the name in your configuration file
A worker name is a label for one mining device, such as home-desktop. It helps you tell your devices apart on your pool’s dashboard. It does not change how fast your computer mines.
Open the config.json file that XMRig uses. Find the "pools" section, then add or edit "rig-id" inside the entry for your pool:
"pools": [
{
"url": "POOL_HOST:PORT",
"user": "YOUR_XMR_WALLET_ADDRESS",
"pass": "x",
"rig-id": "home-desktop"
}
]
This is a configuration excerpt, not a complete XMRig configuration file. Keep your existing pool address, wallet address, and other settings. Replace only the worker name unless your pool’s instructions require more changes.
Save the file and restart XMRig so it loads the updated setting. If your configuration contains several pool entries, set the name separately in each entry where you need it.
Set the name from the command line
If you launch XMRig by typing a command or using a startup script, add:
--rig-id=home-desktop
For example:
xmrig -o POOL_HOST:PORT -u YOUR_XMR_WALLET_ADDRESS -p x --rig-id=home-desktop
Replace the placeholders with your actual pool details and wallet address. Keep any other options your pool requires.
The --rig-id option identifies the worker only when the pool supports it. XMRig accepting the option does not guarantee that the pool will show that name.
Check your pool’s naming rules
There is no single worker-naming format that every Monero pool uses. Check your pool’s XMRig setup instructions for its expected method.
You might see:
- Rig ID: Set
"rig-id": "home-desktop"or use--rig-id=home-desktop. - Wallet plus worker: Put something like
YOUR_XMR_WALLET_ADDRESS.home-desktopin"user"or after-u. - Password field: Put
home-desktopin"pass"or after-p.
The wallet-plus-worker example is not universal. Use the separator and format your pool specifies. Likewise, do not replace the password field if your pool uses it for other settings or authentication.
Choose a short, simple name with letters, numbers, or hyphens. Avoid spaces and personal information.
Confirm that the name appears
After restarting, check that XMRig connects and submits accepted shares—pieces of mining work the pool accepts as evidence of your contribution.
Then open your pool dashboard and look for its workers list. Updates may take a little time. If the name is missing:
- Confirm you edited the configuration file XMRig actually loads.
- Check whether your startup script supplies different pool settings.
- Verify that your pool supports your chosen naming method.
The bottom line
Try rig-id first if your pool supports it. Otherwise, follow the pool’s exact username or password format. Give each device a distinct name so you can easily see which one is running.
