Why does XMRig say "no valid configuration found"?
XMRig says “no valid configuration found” when it cannot load settings it can use to start mining. Usually, the configuration file is missing, is in the wrong place, cannot be read, or contains a formatting error—not because your computer cannot mine Monero.
What the message actually means
XMRig is a mining program that runs directly on your computer, rather than inside your browser. It needs settings that tell it where to send its mining work and which wallet address should receive credit.
Those settings usually live in a file named config.json. JSON is a text format with strict rules for punctuation, quotation marks, and how values are arranged.
The final error is often just a summary. Read the lines immediately above it. Depending on your XMRig version, they may show:
- The file paths XMRig tried to open.
- A message saying a file could not be opened.
- A parsing error, meaning XMRig could not understand the file’s text.
- A line number or position pointing near the problem.
Those details help you distinguish a missing file from a broken one.
Make sure XMRig opens the right file
First, check that you extracted the full download into a normal folder. Running the program from inside a compressed ZIP archive can leave its configuration unavailable.
Next, confirm the file is really named config.json. On Windows, hidden filename extensions can make config.json.txt look like config.json. Turn on File name extensions in File Explorer to check.
The simplest way to remove uncertainty is to tell XMRig exactly which file to load. The --config option supplies that file’s location.
On Windows, from Command Prompt in your XMRig folder:
xmrig.exe --config="C:\Mining\xmrig\config.json"
On Linux, from your XMRig folder:
./xmrig --config="/home/you/xmrig/config.json"
Replace the example path with your actual file location. Keep quotation marks around paths, especially if they contain spaces.
If this works, your original shortcut, startup script, or service was probably pointing to the wrong place. Update it to use the same explicit path.
Check the file’s contents
Open the configuration in a plain-text editor, not a word processor. Common problems include:
- Missing commas between settings.
- Missing closing braces
}or brackets]. - Single quotes or curly “smart quotes” instead of straight double quotes
". - An empty file or an incomplete paste.
- Website text accidentally saved instead of the configuration.
An error position may point just after the actual mistake, so inspect the preceding line too.
The safest repair is often to start with the sample configuration supplied with your XMRig release. Add your pool details and wallet address carefully, keeping the surrounding structure intact. A pool is a service that combines miners’ work and shares rewards.
Use a local JSON checker if available. Avoid pasting an unredacted configuration into public tools: it can contain pool credentials or access tokens.
If the file still will not load
Check that the account running XMRig has permission to read the file. This matters particularly when you launch it through a background service using a different account.
Do not run as administrator merely to hide a file-access problem. Fix the path or permissions instead.
Also separate this error from later failures. A pool connection problem, rejected login, or memory allocation error needs a different fix once the configuration loads.
The bottom line
Check the lines above the error, load config.json using its full path, and repair any formatting or read-permission problem. Replacing hardware or changing mining performance settings will not fix a configuration XMRig cannot load.
