Which CPU has the best hashrate per watt for Monero?

AMD Ryzen 9 processors are a strong starting point for the best Monero hashrate per watt, especially the Ryzen 9 7950X and 9950X running at reduced power limits. But there is no reliable universal winner: you need comparable measurements of mining speed and electricity use to know which CPU is most efficient in your setup.

Why Ryzen 9 is a good place to start

Monero uses RandomX, a mining algorithm—the set of calculations your computer performs to help secure the network. It favors CPUs, but efficiency depends on more than how many cores a processor has.

The Ryzen 9 7950X and 9950X combine many cores with generous L3 cache, which is fast memory built into the processor. RandomX needs about 2 MB of L3 cache per mining thread, meaning each separate stream of mining work.

Both processors have 64 MB of L3 cache. That is enough for 32 mining threads by the cache rule, although memory performance and other limits still affect results.

Treat these chips as a shortlist, not a guaranteed ranking. A newer processor, a higher price, or a bigger advertised core count does not automatically mean better mining efficiency. Likewise, an “X3D” model’s extra cache does not guarantee a better result if the workload already has enough cache.

Compare hashes per joule, not just mining speed

Hashrate is the number of mining calculations completed each second. To compare efficiency, divide that speed by power use:

Efficiency = hashes per second ÷ watts

The result is hashes per joule, often written as H/J. Higher is better.

For example, using made-up numbers:

  • A system producing 20,000 hashes per second at 200 watts achieves 100 H/J.
  • A system producing 16,000 hashes per second at 120 watts achieves about 133 H/J.

The slower system is more efficient.

For your electricity bill, use power measured at the wall socket, not just the CPU’s reported power. Your memory, motherboard, cooling, and power supply also consume electricity. Do not compare one review’s CPU-only measurement with another review’s whole-system measurement.

Settings can change the winner

A high-end CPU running at its default power settings may use considerably more electricity for only a small speed improvement.

For better efficiency, you can:

  • Lower the power limit. AMD’s Eco Mode or manual power limits are useful starting points.
  • Test different thread counts. Using every available thread is not always the most efficient choice.
  • Keep cooling adequate. Excess heat can reduce sustained performance.
  • Measure after temperatures settle. Brief benchmark bursts can give misleading results.

Use the same mining software and comparable memory settings when judging two processors. Check that the miner reports valid work without errors.

For browser mining, be especially cautious. Published RandomX CPU benchmarks usually use dedicated mining software. A browser implementation can have different memory and execution limits, so you should not assume those results apply to your browser session.

The bottom line

Start by comparing the Ryzen 9 7950X and 9950X at reduced power limits, using sustained RandomX results and whole-system watts. The best choice is whichever delivers more hashes per joule in your actual setup—not necessarily the highest hashrate.

Before buying, also check purchase cost and a live profitability calculator. Excellent electrical efficiency alone does not guarantee that mining will repay a new CPU.
