What is the minimum amount of Monero I can send?

The smallest positive amount of Monero you can send is 0.000000000001 XMR, called one piconero. However, your wallet or the service you use may set a higher minimum, and you also need to cover the transaction fee.

The smallest unit of Monero

Monero amounts can have up to 12 digits after the decimal point. One piconero is one trillionth of an XMR—the smallest unit the network can represent.

For example:

  • 0.001 XMR is a valid amount.
  • 0.000001 XMR is also a valid amount.
  • 0.000000000001 XMR is the smallest positive amount.
  • 0.0000000000001 XMR is too small because it needs a thirteenth decimal place.

You do not need to own or send a whole XMR. Like sending part of a dollar, you can send a fraction, although Monero allows much smaller fractions than ordinary money.

That precision is a network feature, not a promise that every wallet app will let you enter all 12 decimal places.

The fee is separate from the amount

A transaction fee is the amount you pay the network to process your transfer. It is not a minimum payment to the recipient.

If you enter a specific amount to send, your wallet will normally need enough available XMR to cover:

  • The amount going to the recipient.
  • The network fee shown before you confirm.

Some wallets offer a “send all” option that deducts the fee from your available balance instead.

The fee is not simply a percentage of what you send. It depends on the transaction’s size and the network’s fee rules, with your wallet’s priority setting also potentially affecting the cost. Sending a tiny amount therefore does not guarantee a proportionally tiny fee.

You could spend more on the fee than the recipient receives. For an ordinary payment, check the wallet’s fee estimate before deciding whether such a small transfer makes sense.

Wallets and services can set higher limits

The network’s smallest unit is different from a service’s minimum.

Your wallet may restrict very small transfers through its interface. An exchange—a service where you buy or sell cryptocurrency—may have its own minimum withdrawal or minimum deposit.

These limits serve different purposes:

  • Minimum withdrawal: The smallest amount a service lets you send out.
  • Minimum deposit: The smallest incoming amount it agrees to credit to your account.
  • Minimum mining payout: The balance you must earn before a mining service sends your rewards.

A valid Monero transfer can still fall below an exchange’s deposit minimum. In that case, it might not be credited automatically, or at all, depending on the service’s rules. Check the receiving service’s requirements before sending a small test payment.

The bottom line

One piconero, or 0.000000000001 XMR, is the smallest positive Monero amount. Your practical minimum depends on your wallet, the transaction fee, and any receiving service’s rules. Before confirming, check how much the recipient will get and how much your total balance will decrease.
