What is the easiest way to start mining Monero?

The easiest way to try Monero mining is a browser-based miner, because you do not have to install mining software. But if you want a practical setup that usually makes better use of your computer, start with a trusted desktop miner and a mining pool. Treat browser mining as a small experiment, not an easy source of income.

Pick the easiest route for your goal

Mining means using your computer to help secure Monero’s network, with a chance to earn XMR, its currency.

You have two simple starting options:

  • For a quick test: A browser miner can let you start from a web page. Use only a service that clearly explains its fees, payouts, and what your computer actually mines.
  • For regular mining: A desktop miner such as XMRig takes more setup but usually works much more efficiently.

Monero uses RandomX, a mining algorithm—the set of calculations miners perform. It favors your CPU, the main processor in your computer. You do not need to buy a powerful graphics card to get started.

Browser mining has important limits. Browsers restrict access to memory and processor features, which makes efficient RandomX mining difficult. Some services may mine another coin and pay you in XMR instead. Receiving Monero does not necessarily mean you are mining Monero directly.

Get a wallet before you start

A Monero wallet lets you receive and manage your XMR. Choose a well-established wallet from its official source, and copy your receiving address.

During setup, your wallet may give you a recovery phrase, a set of words that restores access to your money. Keep it somewhere private and secure.

A mining service needs your receiving address. It does not need:

  • Your recovery phrase.
  • Your wallet’s private keys, which control your funds.
  • A payment to “unlock” your mining earnings.

Before choosing a service, check its minimum payout. A high threshold could leave a small beginner balance unpaid for a long time.

For a useful first setup, join a pool

A mining pool combines work from many miners and shares rewards. This makes earning small amounts more predictable than mining alone, where you might wait an extremely long time for a reward.

For a straightforward desktop start:

  1. Use a computer you own or have explicit permission to mine on.
  2. Download XMRig from its official project source.
  3. Choose a reputable Monero pool with clear setup instructions, fees, and payout rules.
  4. Enter the pool’s connection details and your wallet address in the miner’s settings.
  5. Start with only part of your CPU’s capacity.

Security software sometimes flags mining programs because criminals also misuse them. Do not turn off your protection blindly. Verify the download and avoid installers shared through unsolicited messages or ads.

Run a short test before committing

Let the miner run briefly while you watch your computer’s temperature, fan noise, and responsiveness. Reduce its workload or stop if your computer becomes too hot or unpleasant to use.

Your hashrate is your mining speed. Once you have a measured hashrate, use a live Monero mining calculator and include your electricity price and pool fees. Small earnings can easily be outweighed by power costs.

The bottom line

Use browser mining if you only want the quickest demonstration. For a more useful start, use your existing computer, a trusted desktop miner, and a reputable pool. Test first, check costs, and do not buy hardware expecting guaranteed profit.
