What is P2Pool mini?
P2Pool mini is a version of Monero’s decentralized mining pool designed for miners with less computing power. It makes it easier for a small miner to earn pool shares, but it does not guarantee more XMR or steady daily payments.
What “mini” actually means
P2Pool lets you mine alongside other people without a central pool operator holding your rewards. It tracks everyone’s contributions on a sidechain—a separate record of mining work that runs alongside Monero’s main blockchain.
Mini uses its own sidechain, separate from the main P2Pool sidechain. Its key difference is a lower share difficulty, meaning less work is usually needed to submit a qualifying contribution.
You still mine the same Monero network and receive the same XMR. “Mini” does not mean a different coin, a smaller Monero block reward, or an easier version of Monero mining.
Why it suits smaller miners
Your hashrate is the number of mining calculations your device performs each second. With a low hashrate, you might wait a long time to find a share on the main P2Pool sidechain.
Mini lowers that barrier. Finding shares more often can make participation more practical for a single computer or a modest CPU setup.
There is a trade-off, though:
- Lower share difficulty helps you earn shares more regularly.
- The mini sidechain typically has less total mining power than the main sidechain.
- Less combined mining power means longer average waits between Monero blocks found by that group.
Those conditions can change. Check current sidechain statistics rather than assuming mini always has a particular size or payout schedule.
How you receive rewards
A share is proof that you contributed work. It is not a payment by itself.
P2Pool uses pay per last N shares, usually shortened to PPLNS. This means rewards go to miners whose shares are still inside a recent-work window when their sidechain finds a Monero block.
If your shares qualify, your portion is sent directly to your wallet in the block’s mining reward. There is no central pool balance to withdraw and no operator-set minimum withdrawal threshold.
However, you should understand two limits:
- Your shares can leave the payout window before the group finds a block, earning nothing.
- Newly mined XMR stays locked for 60 blocks—roughly two hours at Monero’s average block time of about two minutes.
Mini makes shares easier to find. It does not remove luck, waiting, or reward fluctuations.
What you need to use it
A typical setup includes a synchronized Monero node, P2Pool software configured for mini, and a CPU mining program such as XMRig. A node is software that checks and shares blockchain data.
Simply opening a browser-mining page does not mean you are using P2Pool mini. The service must explicitly support that connection and explain how your work and payouts are handled.
P2Pool itself charges no pool fee, but electricity, hardware use, and any separate software or service charges still matter. Never give a mining service your wallet’s recovery words or private spending key.
The bottom line
P2Pool mini is worth considering when you have a small mining setup and want direct, decentralized payouts. Choose it for more accessible share difficulty—not because you expect guaranteed income or automatically higher earnings.
