What is MSR mod in XMRig?

MSR mod in XMRig is a processor tuning step that can improve Monero mining speed. It changes certain low-level processor settings, usually to reduce hardware prefetching, which can slow down Monero’s RandomX mining work. It is not a separate miner, an overclock, or a modification to Monero itself.

What “MSR” means

MSR stands for Model-Specific Register. These are special controls inside your CPU, the main processor in your computer. Your operating system normally manages access to them because changing the wrong setting can cause problems.

XMRig is mining software that runs directly on your computer. When it applies its MSR modification, it writes selected values to these controls using settings suited to supported processor models.

You may see this called the “MSR mod,” “MSR tweak,” or “MSR optimization.” In XMRig discussions, these usually mean the same feature.

Why it can help RandomX

Monero uses RandomX, its mining algorithm—the set of computing tasks miners perform to help secure the network.

Your CPU normally tries to predict which data a program will need next. It fetches that data early through a feature called hardware prefetching. That is useful for many everyday programs.

RandomX accesses memory in ways that are difficult to predict. Some prefetching can therefore bring in unneeded data, taking up memory bandwidth and space in the CPU’s small, fast storage, called its cache.

XMRig’s MSR tuning can disable selected prefetching features on supported processors. This may improve your hashrate, meaning how many mining calculations your computer completes each second.

The benefit depends on your processor and setup. It does not guarantee a particular speed increase, and it does not replace sufficient memory, good cooling, or other mining optimizations.

How XMRig applies it

Official XMRig builds normally attempt MSR tuning when the feature is enabled and your processor supports it. Applying it requires higher system permissions:

  • Windows: You generally need to run XMRig as administrator. A low-level driver provides access to the processor controls.
  • Linux: You generally need root privileges and access through the operating system’s MSR interface.

Check XMRig’s startup messages for whether the MSR settings were applied successfully. An MSR error usually means the optimization failed—not necessarily that mining cannot continue.

XMRig also provides configuration controls for MSR access. Avoid copying raw register values from someone with a different CPU; those settings are processor-specific.

Safety and restoring your settings

The standard MSR modification does not flash your BIOS, permanently rewrite your processor, or directly raise its clock speed or voltage.

However, these changes affect processor behavior beyond XMRig. Other programs may perform differently while the settings are active.

XMRig normally attempts to restore the original values when it exits cleanly, provided reading and restoration are enabled. A crash or forced shutdown can prevent that cleanup. Restarting your computer generally resets these temporary changes.

Only give administrator or root access to software you trust. A download advertised as a special “MSR unlocker” deserves particular caution; you do not need a mystery tool promising guaranteed earnings.

The bottom line

MSR mod is optional CPU tuning that can help XMRig run RandomX more efficiently. Check whether it applies successfully, compare your hashrate, and keep it only if the benefit and system behavior work for you.
