What is Feather Wallet and is it good for Monero?
Feather Wallet is a free, open-source desktop wallet made specifically for Monero (XMR). It is a good choice if you want control of your coins, useful privacy features, and a wallet that does not require you to download Monero’s full transaction history. Its main trade-off is that you must protect your own recovery phrase and computer.
What Feather does for you
Feather runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is non-custodial, which means you control the secret keys that let you spend your Monero. There is no company holding your balance or offering a password reset for your coins.
Your XMR is recorded on Monero’s blockchain, its shared transaction record. Feather holds the keys needed to find and spend your funds; it does not store coins like files on your computer.
You can use Feather to:
- Receive mining payouts or payments.
- Send XMR to another wallet or an exchange that accepts it.
- Create subaddresses, extra receiving addresses within the same wallet, to help keep payments organized and reduce address reuse.
- Review transactions and manage spending.
Feather is not a miner, bank, or exchange. Installing it does not earn XMR or turn your balance into cash.
Why it is a good Monero option
Feather connects to a node, a computer that keeps track of Monero’s blockchain. You can use a remote node instead of running one yourself, which saves considerable disk space and setup work.
That makes Feather convenient, but “lightweight” does not mean instant. Your wallet still needs to scan blockchain information to find your transactions, especially when you restore an older wallet.
Feather also includes Tor support. Tor routes connections through several computers to help hide your internet address from the service you contact. This is useful for privacy, but it does not make an infected computer safe or guarantee anonymity.
A remote node does not receive your spending keys and cannot simply take your XMR. However, your choice of node still matters for privacy and reliable access. Feather lets you use your own node if you want more independence.
Using it for mining payouts
Feather works well as a destination for Monero mining payouts, including payouts from a browser-mining service that genuinely pays XMR.
Create a receiving address in Feather, then copy it into the service’s payout settings. Check the pasted address carefully. Some malware replaces copied cryptocurrency addresses with an attacker’s address.
You do not normally need to leave Feather open to receive a payout. It will find the payment when it next connects and finishes syncing.
Keep these distinctions in mind:
- The mining service controls its payout threshold, schedule, and fees—not Feather.
- Ordinary received funds generally need 10 confirmations before you can spend them.
- Newly mined block rewards are locked for 60 blocks. A pool payment sent as a normal transaction is different.
Never give a mining website your recovery phrase or private keys. It only needs your receiving address.
The bottom line
Feather is a strong desktop choice if you want a practical Monero wallet without running a full node. Download it from the official project source, follow its instructions for verifying the download, and keep your recovery phrase offline and private.
It will not sell your XMR or handle your taxes for you. Keep payout and sale records, and check local tax rules or speak with a qualified professional. Most importantly, remember that losing both your wallet access and recovery backup can mean losing your funds permanently.
