What hashrate do I need for P2Pool?

You do not need a fixed minimum hashrate to mine Monero on P2Pool. Even a slow CPU can participate, but your hashrate affects how often you earn a share—and whether your payouts arrive regularly or with long gaps.

There is no entry requirement

Your hashrate is the number of mining calculations your device performs each second. It is usually shown in hashes per second (H/s) or thousands of hashes per second (kH/s).

P2Pool is a decentralized mining pool: you work with other miners without a central operator holding your earnings. It does not require you to bring a certain amount of computing power.

The practical question is not “Will P2Pool accept me?” It is “How long am I comfortable waiting for a payout opportunity?”

With a low hashrate, you might mine correctly for a long time without finding a qualifying share. That alone does not mean something is broken.

Choose a sidechain suited to your hashrate

P2Pool uses a sidechain, a separate record that tracks miners’ contributions. The main and mini sidechains both help mine Monero, but track contributions separately.

  • P2Pool main generally suits higher-hashrate miners.
  • P2Pool mini is designed to make qualifying shares more accessible to smaller miners.

If you mine with one ordinary home CPU, mini is generally the more sensible starting point. There is no universal cutoff where you must switch to main: sidechain conditions change, and different miners prefer different payout patterns.

Mini does not create extra Monero for your computer’s work. It changes the balance between how often you find shares and how often the sidechain finds Monero blocks.

Estimate your time to a share

A share is proof that your miner completed work meeting a required difficulty. Difficulty describes how much work a qualifying result takes, on average.

For a useful estimate:

Average seconds per P2Pool share = current sidechain share difficulty ÷ your hashrate in H/s

For example, with a hypothetical share difficulty of 30 million and a hashrate of 1,000 H/s, your average wait would be 30,000 seconds—about 8.3 hours.

That is an illustration, not a current P2Pool estimate. Check the relevant sidechain’s live statistics or an up-to-date calculator.

Also, use your sustained hashrate, not a brief peak. A laptop that slows down when hot may average much less than its initial reading.

Understand why payouts can be uneven

P2Pool normally uses a rolling payout window of 2,160 sidechain blocks, roughly six hours. You receive a payment when your sidechain finds a Monero block while your qualifying shares are in that window.

This means:

  • Finding a share does not guarantee a payment.
  • Your average wait is not a deadline; luck can produce much longer gaps.
  • Tiny hashrates can mean very irregular earnings, even without an operator-set withdrawal threshold.

If you mine in a browser, first check whether the service actually supports P2Pool. Seeing an H/s figure does not prove that your work reaches P2Pool. Browser mining also commonly delivers less performance than dedicated CPU mining software.

The bottom line

You can use P2Pool with a low hashrate, but patience matters more than meeting a minimum. Start by considering mini, measure your sustained speed, and compare it with current share difficulty to judge whether the likely waiting time suits you.
