What does termux-wake-lock do for mining?
termux-wake-lock asks Android to keep your phone’s processor awake so a miner running in Termux can keep working when the screen turns off. It does not make mining faster, prevent overheating, or guarantee that Android will leave your miner running.
What the command actually keeps awake
Termux is an Android app that gives you a command-line workspace, where you type commands to run software. If you run a Monero miner inside Termux, that miner needs the CPU—your device’s main processor—to stay active.
Android normally tries to save energy when you stop using your phone. A wake lock is an app’s request to keep part of the device awake. termux-wake-lock requests a partial wake lock, which keeps the CPU awake without requiring the display to stay on.
That matters because turning off the screen and putting the CPU to sleep are different things. With the lock held, you can switch off the display while your miner continues doing calculations, provided Android keeps Termux running.
The command does not start a miner. It only changes the conditions under which an already-running program can work.
How you use it during a mining session
In Termux, enter:
termux-wake-lock
Then start your miner using its usual command. You do not need to keep the screen lit just to maintain the wake lock.
When you finish:
- Stop the miner. For a miner running directly in your terminal, this usually means pressing
Ctrl+C. - Release the wake lock:
termux-wake-unlock
These are separate actions. Releasing the wake lock does not stop mining, and stopping your miner does not necessarily release the lock.
If the command is unavailable, check your Termux installation and its included tools. You should not need a random “mining booster” app or a paid wake-lock service.
What it cannot fix
A wake lock is not a complete solution to Android’s background restrictions. Your phone may still limit or stop Termux because of:
- Battery-saving settings or manufacturer-specific app restrictions.
- Low available memory.
- Android limits on background processes.
- You force-stopping the app or restarting the phone.
It also does not guarantee an uninterrupted internet connection. Your miner needs that connection to submit work to a mining pool, a service where miners combine their work and share rewards.
If mining stops with the screen off, check Termux’s battery and background-app settings. Allowing unrestricted background use may help, but behavior varies by Android version and phone manufacturer.
What this means for heat, battery, and browser mining
Keeping the CPU working for longer means more energy use. Your phone may get hot and automatically slow its processor to protect itself. That slowdown is called thermal throttling, and a wake lock cannot prevent it.
Monitor temperature, keep the phone uncovered and ventilated, and stop if it becomes unusually hot. Continuous mining, especially while charging, can increase battery wear. A wake lock does not make phone mining profitable.
This command is mainly relevant to a miner running inside Termux, not a mining page in your browser. It does not override a browser’s rules for pausing background tabs or limiting their processing.
The bottom line
Use termux-wake-lock to help a Termux miner keep working with the screen off—not to boost its speed. Stop the miner and run termux-wake-unlock when you finish, and treat heat and Android’s background limits as separate issues.
