Should I use the xmrig-cuda plugin for Monero?

Usually, no—you should not use the xmrig-cuda plugin just to mine Monero. Monero’s mining method favors your computer’s processor, so a compatible NVIDIA graphics card can work with the plugin but is usually much less efficient than a suitable CPU.

What the plugin actually does

XMRig is mining software you install and run on your computer. Its xmrig-cuda plugin adds support for mining with NVIDIA graphics cards through CUDA, NVIDIA’s system for running calculations on a graphics card.

The plugin is optional. You do not need it to mine Monero with your CPU, your computer’s main processor. It also does not support AMD graphics cards, which use a different software backend.

Most importantly, the plugin does not make your CPU mine faster. It gives XMRig another piece of hardware to use. Whether that extra hardware is worth running is a separate question.

It is also not a browser-mining add-on. Installing it will not speed up mining inside a web page.

Why it is usually a poor fit for Monero

Monero has used RandomX, its mining algorithm, since November 30, 2019. An algorithm is the set of calculations your hardware performs while mining. RandomX was designed to favor general-purpose CPUs rather than graphics cards.

Its workload relies on memory access and varied instructions, not just the large number of parallel calculations that graphics cards handle well.

For context, RandomX’s fast mode uses a dataset of about 2,080 MB—a working collection of data held in memory. Efficient CPU mining also generally needs about 2 MB of L3 cache per mining thread. L3 cache is fast memory inside your processor, and a thread is one worker performing calculations.

Having a powerful NVIDIA card with plenty of graphics memory does not remove that mismatch. You might gain some extra mining speed, but often at an unattractive cost in electricity, heat, and fan noise.

When trying it might make sense

You could reasonably test the plugin if you already own a compatible NVIDIA card and want to learn how it performs. Treat that as an experiment, not a reason to buy a GPU for Monero.

Compare two setups:

  • XMRig using only your CPU.
  • XMRig using your CPU plus the CUDA plugin.

For each setup, record your hashrate, meaning mining calculations per second, and total electricity use at the wall. Check whether running the graphics card also changes CPU performance or makes your computer uncomfortable to use.

Use a live mining calculator with your electricity price. Compare the value of the additional mining output against the additional power cost. Free electricity can change that calculation, but heat, noise, and hardware wear still matter.

If you decide to install it

Get XMRig and the plugin from their official project sources. Follow the compatibility instructions for your plugin release, XMRig version, NVIDIA driver, and operating system.

Avoid download sites promising a special “Monero GPU booster” or guaranteed earnings. No plugin can change RandomX’s basic hardware preferences. Mining software never needs your wallet’s private keys or recovery phrase.

Only run mining software on devices you own or have clear permission to use.

The bottom line

For Monero, start with XMRig’s CPU mining and leave the CUDA plugin disabled. Add it only for a measured experiment with an NVIDIA card you already have—not because you expect it to be an efficient Monero upgrade.
