Is Monero mining legal in the UK?

Yes—mining Monero (XMR) is generally legal in the UK as of 2026. You can usually mine on your own computer using electricity you are entitled to use, but you still need to follow tax rules, obtain any necessary permissions, and avoid unlawful activity.

Mining Monero is not banned

Monero is a cryptocurrency designed to keep payment details private. Those privacy features do not, by themselves, make owning or mining it illegal in the UK.

Mining means using your computer to help check transactions and secure the network, with the possibility of earning XMR. Simply mining for your own account generally does not require registration with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK’s financial regulator.

That is different from running certain crypto businesses, such as an exchange or a service that holds customers’ crypto. Those activities can have separate legal requirements. You must also follow laws against money laundering and dealing with sanctioned people or organisations; Monero’s privacy features do not create an exemption.

Permission matters—even in a browser

Mining through a website is not automatically illegal or automatically safe. The important questions are whose device you are using, who pays for the power, and whether you have permission.

  • Your home computer: Mining is generally lawful if you control the device and are entitled to use the electricity.
  • A workplace or school computer: Do not mine without explicit authorisation. Being allowed to use a computer does not mean you are allowed to mine on it.
  • A rented server or shared property: Check your hosting agreement, tenancy terms, and electricity arrangements. An “unlimited” plan is not necessarily permission to run mining software.

Secretly installing or running a miner on someone else’s equipment can raise issues under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. Dishonestly taking electricity can also be a criminal offence.

For browser mining, you should be clearly told what will run and be able to stop it. Close the page if mining starts without your informed agreement.

Your mining rewards may be taxable

Legal does not mean tax-free. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), the UK tax authority, looks at how you mine and what you do with the rewards.

If your mining does not amount to a trade, rewards are generally treated as miscellaneous income, valued in pounds when received. If your activity amounts to a trade, trading-income rules apply instead. Allowable expenses and any relevant tax allowances depend on your circumstances.

Selling, swapping, spending, or giving away mined XMR can also create a Capital Gains Tax issue, although exceptions exist.

Keep records of:

  • When you receive rewards and how much XMR you receive.
  • Their value in pounds at that time.
  • Mining fees, electricity costs, and equipment purchases.
  • Later sales, swaps, or other disposals.

Do not assume every cost is fully deductible. Check current HMRC guidance or ask a UK tax adviser.

Watch for misleading legality claims

A site claiming “UK legal” is not proof that it is trustworthy. Guaranteed returns, demands for an extra payment to release earnings, and requests for your wallet’s secret recovery words are serious warning signs.

FCA registration, where relevant, is not an endorsement or a guarantee that your money is protected.

The bottom line

You can generally mine Monero legally in the UK. Use authorised equipment and electricity, check your agreements, and keep tax records. For a business setup or an uncertain arrangement, get advice based on your circumstances.
