How much does the MSR mod improve Monero hashrate?

The MSR mod can improve Monero mining speed by roughly 5–15% on some desktop CPUs, but that is a ballpark, not a promise. Your gain may be close to zero or occasionally higher, depending on your processor, its settings, and whether your mining software already applies the change.

What the MSR mod actually changes

MSR stands for model-specific register. These are special controls inside your CPU—the main processor in your PC or server.

For Monero mining, the “MSR mod” usually means changing certain CPU settings to reduce interference from hardware prefetchers. Prefetchers try to guess which data your processor will need next and fetch it early.

That normally helps software run faster. However, Monero’s mining algorithm, RandomX, makes frequent, unpredictable memory accesses. Some prefetching can waste resources instead of helping. Using suitable MSR settings can reduce that waste.

This is not a physical modification or an overclock. You are changing processor behavior, not automatically raising its clock speed.

How much improvement should you expect?

Treat 5–15% as a rough testing expectation for a responsive system, rather than a reliable average for every CPU.

Your result depends on several things:

  • CPU family: Intel and AMD processors have different controls. Settings that help one model may not help another.
  • Existing settings: Your miner or system firmware may already have disabled the relevant prefetchers.
  • Other bottlenecks: Slow memory, insufficient cache, or overheating can limit the benefit.
  • Server configuration: Multiple processor sockets and memory placement can affect results more than this adjustment.

For scale, a hypothetical machine producing 10,000 hashes per second would reach 11,000 with a 10% improvement. Hashes per second measure how many mining calculations your machine performs.

There is no universal “MSR enabled” speed boost. If someone promises a fixed percentage for every computer, be skeptical.

Check whether you already have the benefit

Native mining software such as XMRig, which runs directly on your operating system, can apply suitable MSR settings on supported systems when it has the necessary permissions.

Check your miner’s startup messages. Look for confirmation that the MSR settings were applied, rather than assuming that running as administrator made them work.

To measure the benefit yourself:

  • Compare runs with the MSR adjustment disabled and enabled.
  • Keep your thread count, memory settings, and cooling unchanged.
  • Let the machine warm up before recording results.
  • Compare several steady runs, not brief speed peaks.

Use the miner’s local speed reading. Pool-side estimates can fluctuate because mining results arrive randomly.

What this means for browser mining

A normal web page cannot directly change your CPU’s MSRs. Your browser deliberately blocks that level of hardware access.

So you should not expect a browser mining button to apply the same optimization as a native miner. Be wary of sites asking you to install an unknown “MSR booster” or disable security protections.

On a shared server, get the owner’s approval before changing processor settings. Disabling prefetchers may hurt other workloads, even when it helps mining.

The bottom line

Expect a possible modest improvement, not a guaranteed transformation. Check whether your native miner already applies MSR settings, then measure your own before-and-after results. For browser-only Monero mining, MSR tuning is not an optimization the webpage can directly perform.
