How many confirmations does Monero need?

For a normal Monero payment, you generally need 10 confirmations before you can spend the XMR you received. That usually takes about 20 minutes, though it can be faster or slower. If you are sending XMR to an exchange, its own confirmation requirement decides when you can sell or trade it.

What a confirmation means

A confirmation means your payment has been included in the blockchain, Monero’s shared record of transactions, and counted as part of its history.

When your transaction first appears in a block—a group of transactions added to that record—it gets its first confirmation. Each new block after that adds another.

You may see these stages in your wallet:

  • Pending or unconfirmed: Your transaction has been sent but has not yet entered a block.
  • Confirmed but locked: Your wallet sees the payment, but you cannot spend it yet.
  • Unlocked or available: Your XMR is ready to send elsewhere.

Your wallet may show an incoming payment before it is spendable. That is normal and does not mean anything has gone wrong.

How long you should expect to wait

Monero adds a block roughly every two minutes. For everyday planning, allow around 20 minutes for a normal payment to become available.

This is an estimate, not a timer. Blocks can arrive close together or take longer than usual. Your transaction may also wait before it enters its first block.

Once you already have the first confirmation, reaching 10 means waiting for nine more blocks. That is roughly another 18 minutes at the average pace.

Your wallet also needs to be synchronized, meaning it has downloaded or checked the latest blockchain information. If it is behind, your displayed confirmation count or available balance may lag behind the network.

Why a mining payout may need a different wait

The key distinction is who sends your payment, not simply whether you earned it by mining.

  • A normal payment from a mining pool or website: This generally follows the normal 10-confirmation rule.
  • A newly mined block reward paid directly to you: This stays locked for 60 blocks, roughly two hours.

A mining pool is a service that combines work from many miners and divides the rewards. When it sends you an ordinary payout from its wallet, you generally do not need to wait 60 blocks just because the money came from mining.

Also separate confirmation time from payout time. A service may require a minimum balance or send payments on a schedule. The confirmation wait begins once it sends a transaction and that transaction enters a block—not when your earnings first appear on its dashboard.

When an exchange sets its own requirement

If you want to sell your XMR, check the receiving exchange’s Monero deposit instructions before sending.

An exchange can require a different number of confirmations before crediting your account. Wallet availability and exchange crediting are separate rules, so your deposit may still show as pending after the usual network wait.

If the deposit is delayed, check the transaction status, the exchange’s stated requirement, and any deposit maintenance notice. Never give support staff your wallet’s secret recovery words.

The bottom line

Expect 10 confirmations for a normal Monero payment and 60 blocks for a newly mined reward. Allow roughly 20 minutes or two hours, respectively, and follow your exchange’s separate deposit requirement if you plan to sell.
