How do I report Monero mining in the UK?

In the UK, you normally report Monero mining rewards as income, valued in pounds when you receive them. If you later sell, swap or spend that XMR, you may also need to report a capital gain or loss. The income reporting depends on whether your mining is a small activity or a business.

Work out how HMRC treats your mining

HMRC, the UK tax authority, looks at how your mining operates. The scale, organisation, commercial approach and intention to make a profit all matter.

  • Mining that is not a trade: Rewards are generally taxable as miscellaneous income. This is likely to be the starting point for small-scale browser mining.
  • Mining as a trade: Profits generally count as self-employment income. Different expense rules apply, and National Insurance may also be due.

Neither using a browser nor receiving tiny payouts automatically makes mining tax-free.

The £1,000 trading allowance may cover qualifying casual income, including some non-trading mining income. It applies to total qualifying gross income before expenses, not separately to each platform. You generally cannot deduct expenses and claim the allowance against the same income.

Record your payouts in pounds

For each mining payout, keep:

  • The date, amount of XMR and transaction or platform reference.
  • Its reasonable market value in pounds at receipt.
  • The price source and calculation you used.
  • Any fees, plus evidence of relevant expenses.

You do not wait until you withdraw pounds to have taxable income. Receiving XMR can create income even if you keep it in your wallet.

For browser or pool mining, distinguish between an estimated unpaid balance and a reward you have actually received or become entitled to. Withdrawal thresholds and platform terms can complicate the timing. Ask a tax adviser if significant rewards remain on a platform across the tax-year end.

Monero’s privacy features do not remove your reporting duties. Save payout statements and wallet records yourself.

Account for expenses and later disposals

Allowable mining expenses may reduce taxable income, but they must meet the relevant rules. Keep evidence of electricity used specifically for mining rather than claiming your entire household bill. Computers used partly for personal purposes need careful treatment; do not assume their full purchase price is immediately deductible.

Selling XMR for pounds, swapping it for another cryptocurrency or spending it normally counts as a disposal for Capital Gains Tax. Moving XMR between wallets you own normally does not.

The pound value already recognised as mining income generally becomes its acquisition cost. UK rules usually combine holdings of the same cryptocurrency into a shared cost pool, with special matching rules for same-day acquisitions and acquisitions within the following 30 days.

Trading businesses can have different treatment, so get advice rather than applying investment rules automatically.

Report through Self Assessment

The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Where reporting is required:

  • Non-trading mining income generally goes under other taxable income.
  • Trading income goes on the self-employment pages.
  • Reportable capital gains go on the capital gains pages.

For example, for 2025/26, the usual deadline to notify HMRC that you need Self Assessment is 5 October 2026. Online filing and payment are normally due 31 January 2027.

The bottom line

Keep pound-valued payout records and track what happens to each holding afterwards. Check HMRC’s current rules and allowances for the relevant tax year, and use a UK tax professional if your mining is substantial or its treatment is unclear.
