Do I need to count AC or heating costs in Monero mining profit?

Yes. You should count any extra air-conditioning cost caused by Monero mining, because it reduces your profit. In cold weather, you may count a heating saving instead—but only if the mining heat actually reduces what you spend on your usual heating.

Count the change, not your whole energy bill

The useful question is: How much does mining change your household energy costs? You do not need to charge mining for cooling or heating you would have used anyway.

Almost all the electricity your computer uses eventually becomes heat in your room. That means mining can affect your bill twice: once to run the computer, and again to remove that heat with air conditioning.

For browser mining, compare your computer’s power use while mining with its power use doing the same tasks without mining. If you leave the computer on only to mine, count its full power use during that time instead.

A plug-in electricity meter can help you measure this. A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of electricity use—the unit your electricity supplier normally charges you for.

Add the extra cooling cost

If your AC runs longer because your computer is mining, include that extra electricity in your costs. Do not assume cooling costs equal the computer’s electricity cost: an AC moves heat rather than simply consuming the same amount of power as the heat source.

For a rough estimate, you can use the AC’s coefficient of performance (COP). This means how much heat it removes for each unit of electricity it uses.

For example, suppose:

  • Mining adds 100 watts to your computer’s power use.
  • You mine for 10 hours, using 1 extra kWh.
  • Your AC’s cooling COP is 3 under those conditions.

Removing that extra heat would use roughly 0.33 kWh. Your combined mining and cooling use would therefore be about 1.33 kWh, multiplied by your electricity rate.

That is an illustration, not a guaranteed result. Outdoor temperature, AC efficiency, and where your computer sits all matter. If the heat leaves through an open window without extra powered cooling, you may have little or no added cooling cost.

Only credit heating you actually replace

Mining heat is not automatically a saving just because it is winter. It must reach a space you want warm and cause your normal heater to run less.

Your heating system makes a big difference:

  • Electric resistance heating, such as a basic plug-in heater: mining can replace a similar amount of heating electricity when its heat is fully useful.
  • A heat pump, which moves heat indoors: mining usually costs more per unit of heat delivered. A heat pump can supply several units of heat for each unit of electricity.
  • Gas or other fuel heating: compare the fuel cost avoided, allowing for your heater’s efficiency.

Do not claim a heating saving if your room overheats, you open a window to cool it, or your main heating keeps running unchanged.

The bottom line

Use this calculation: mining revenue minus computer electricity minus extra cooling costs plus real heating savings minus other mining costs.

Work it out separately for warm and cold months. Check a live mining calculator for revenue estimates using your measured mining speed. Useful winter heat can improve your result, but it does not make browser mining automatically profitable—and summer AC can make a small return disappear.
