Can I mine Monero on a cloud VPS?

Yes, you can mine Monero on a cloud VPS, a virtual private server you rent from a hosting company, if the provider explicitly allows mining. But it is usually hard to make a profit: rental costs, shared processing power, and provider restrictions can outweigh the Monero you earn.

Check permission before you rent

A VPS gives you access to a remote computer, but it does not give you unlimited permission to use its hardware. Many providers ban cryptocurrency mining or limit long periods of heavy processor use.

Before you pay, check the provider’s acceptable-use policy and ask support if anything is unclear. Make sure the answer covers your exact plan, not just the company in general.

Look for rules about:

  • Cryptocurrency mining, even for short tests.
  • Sustained high CPU use. The CPU is the computer’s main processor.
  • Free trials, promotional credits, and account suspension.
  • Extra charges or reduced performance after heavy use.

Permission to run general software is not necessarily permission to mine. Do not try to hide mining activity or bypass limits. Free credits do not make a prohibited workload acceptable.

Why VPS hardware can be a poor fit

Monero uses RandomX, its mining algorithm—the rules your computer follows to compete for block rewards. RandomX favors CPUs, so you do not need a graphics card. Still, a plan advertising many virtual CPUs may perform poorly.

A virtual CPU, or vCPU, is processing capacity assigned to your server. It is not always a dedicated physical core. Other customers may share the underlying hardware, making your mining speed inconsistent.

RandomX also needs suitable memory and processor cache, a small area of fast memory inside the CPU:

  • Fast mode uses a dataset of about 2,080 MB, with additional memory needed for the miner and operating system.
  • Light mode uses a 256 MB cache, but runs much more slowly.
  • Plan for roughly 2 MB of L3 cache per mining thread, meaning each parallel mining task.

Cloud plans often do not clearly show how much processor cache you can actually use. Dedicated CPU plans can be more predictable, but usually cost more.

Work out the real cost first

Your hashrate is the number of mining attempts your server makes each second. Measure it on the actual VPS, with permission, rather than trusting results from a similar processor on someone else’s computer.

Use that measured speed in a live Monero mining calculator. Then subtract:

  • The full server rental cost for the same period.
  • Mining pool fees.
  • Any storage, network, or other hosting charges.

A mining pool combines miners’ work and shares rewards. Check its minimum payout too: a slow VPS could take a long time to reach it.

Electricity is usually included in the rental price, but that does not make it free. Check several price and difficulty scenarios rather than assuming today’s estimated return will continue.

If you decide to test it

Start with a short, permitted trial and a firm spending limit. Use reputable mining software from its official distribution source, secure your server, and monitor both performance and billing.

You normally need only your public payout address on the VPS—not your wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys. Never upload those secrets. Be wary of “cloud mining” offers promising guaranteed returns; renting a server yourself is different from paying someone who merely claims to mine for you.

The bottom line

A cloud VPS can be useful for learning or testing Monero mining. For income, proceed only when the provider permits it and your measured results justify the full rental bill.
